[Scene: Central Perk, everyone but Phoebe is there.]

Phoebe: (entering) Hi guys!

            (들어오면서) 안녕!

All: Hey, Pheebs! Hi!

     안녕 피비!

Ross: Hey. Oh, oh, how'd it go?

        오 근데 어떻게 됐어?

Phoebe: Um, not so good. He walked me to the subway and said 'We should do this again!'

       음, 별로 좋진 않아. 그는 지하철까지 데려다주고, '우리 다시 만나자'고 말해줬어.

All: Ohh. Ouch.

     오우....

Rachel: What? He said 'we should do it again', that's good, right?

           왜? 다시만나자고 말한거면, 좋은 거잖아, 맞지?

Monica: Uh, no. Loosely translated 'We should do this again' means 'You will never see me naked'.

        음, 아니야. 쉽게 말하자면, '우리 다시 만나자'의 의미는 '결코 내가 벗은 모습을 보지 못할거야.' 라는 말이거든

Rachel: Since when?

           언제부터?

Joey: Since always. It's like dating language. Y'know, like 'It's not you' means 'It is you'.

       항상 그랬어.  데이트 용어지. 마치, '당신은 아니야'가 '바로 당신아야' 라고 말하는 거처럼

Chandler: Or 'You're such a nice guy' means 'I'm gonna be dating leather-wearing alcoholics and complaining about them to you'.

        또는 '너 진짜 좋은 남자다'는 '나는 가죽옷을 입은 알콜중독자랑 데이트하고나서 너에게 불만을 말해줄게.' 같은 의미야.

Phoebe: Or, or, y'know, um, 'I think we should see other people' means 'Ha, ha, I already am'.

      또는, 음, '내 생각에 우리 다른 사람을 만나는 게 좋겠다' 는 '벌써 그러고 있지롱' 의 의미야

Rachel: And everybody knows this?

      전부다 이걸 알고있다고?

Joey: Yeah. Cushions the blow.

       당연하지. 보험이라고 해야할까?

      (Cushions the blow : To reduce the effect of a fall or hit)

      (영영사전 풀이를 보면, 어떤 충격이 가해질때 그 충격을 최대한 덜 가게 하기 위해서라는 의미기 때문에, 상처입을 걸 대비해서 돌아갈 길을 만든다고 생각하면 될거 같아요 그래서 저는 안전빵, 보험이라고 생각했어요!)

Chandler: Yeah, it's like when you're a kid, and your parents put your dog to sleep, and they tell you it went off to live on some farm.

      그리고, 니가 어렸을 때, 너의 부모님이 강아지를 안락사를 시키고 나서, 농장에서 살도록 보내줬다라고 말하는 거랑 비슷해.

Ross: That's funny, that, no, because, uh, our parents actually did, uh, send our dog off to live on a farm.

        그거 웃기네, 왜냐하면, 실제로 우리 부모님은 그랬었어, 농장으로 우리의 개를 보냈었지.

Monica: Uh, Ross.

       어...로스..

Ross: What? Wh- hello? The Millners' farm in Connecticut? The Millners, they had this unbelievable farm, they had horses, and, and rabbits that he could chase and it was- it w- .....Oh my God, Chi Chi!

      왜? 아니야! 커네티컷 주의 밀너의 농장 몰라? 밀너는 엄청난 농장을 가지고 있어, 말도 키우고, 그리고 우리강아지가 쫓아다닐 토끼들도 있고, 그리고-.....     말도 안돼, 치치! 

 

 

[Scene: Chandler and Joey's, Chandler is helping Joey rehearse for a part.]

Chandler: "So how does it feel knowing you're about to die?"

             "니가 곧 죽는다는 걸 알고 있는 기분이 어때?"

Joey: "Warden, in five minutes my pain will be over. But you'll have to live with the knowledge that you sent an honest man to die."

       "워든, 5분 후면 나의 고통은 끝나. 하지만 너는 정직한 사람을 죽음으로 몰았다는 사실을 안고 평생을 살아야해."

Chandler: Hey, that was really good!

            오, 연기 좋은데!

Joey: Thanks! Let's keep going.

       고마워! 계속 해보자

Chandler: Okay. "So. Whaddya want from me, Damone, huh?"

             좋아. "그래서, 나한테 원하는 게 머야, 드몬, 응?"

Joey: "I just wanna go back to my cell. 'Cause in my cell, I can smoke."

         "나는 나의 감옥으로 다시 돌아가고 싶어. 왜냐면, 감옥에서는 담배를 피울 수 있어."

Chandler: "Smoke away."

             "담배 피워."

(Joey takes out a pack of cigarettes and a lighter.  He fumbles and drops the lighter.  Then he lights a cigarett, takes a drag, and coughs.)

 (조이는 담배와 라이터를 꺼낸다. 조이는 어색하게 라이터를 만지고, 떨어 뜨린다. 그리고 나서 담배에 불을 붙이고, 들이키고, 기침을 한다)

Chandler: I think this is probably why Damone smokes in his cell alone.

             왜 드몬이 그의 감옥에서 담배를 피려고 했는지 알겠군

         (조이가 담배를 잘 피우지 못하자, 비꼬는 말투로 말해주네요 ㅎ)

Joey: What?

        뭐가?

Chandler: Relax your hand! Let your wrist go!

            손을 편하게 해! 손목에 힘을 빼봐! 

(Joey lets his wrist go limp.)

 (조이가 손목을 뻣뻣하게 움직인다)

Chandler: Not so much!

             너무 빼지 말고!

Joey: Whoah!

         호우!

Chandler: Hey!

              헤이!

Joey: Hey!

        헤이!

Chandler: Alright, now try taking a puff.

       좋아, 이제 한번 한모금 빨아봐.

(Joey tries and visibly winces.)

(조이가 한 모금 빨고, 힘든 표정이 보였다)

Chandler: Alright.. okay. No. Give it to me.

             좋아... 음 아니야 나한테 줘봐

Joey: No no no, I am not giving you a cigarette.

       아니아니 나는 너한테 담배를 주지 않을꺼야

      (챈들러는 몇년 전부터 금연 중이에요!)

Chandler: It's fine, it's fine. Look, do you wanna get this part, or not? Here.

          걱정마, 괜찮아. 너, 이 역할 맡고 싶지 않은 거야? 줘봐.

(Joey reluctantly gives him the cigarette.)

 (조이가 마지못해 담배를 준다)

Chandler: Don't think of it as a cigarette. Think of it as the thing that's been missing from your hand. When you're holding it, you feel right. You feel complete.

          담배라고 생각하지 말어. 너의 손에서 잃어버린 무언가라고 생각을 해봐. 니가 이걸 잡고 있으면, 너는 좋은 상태라고 느끼는 거야. 완벽한 느낌이 되는 거지.

Joey: Y'miss it?

       담배가 그리웠어?

Chandler: Nah, not so much. Alright, now we smoke. (Takes a puff.) Oh.. my.. God. (He continues to smoke.)

       아니야, 별로. 좋아, 이제 담배 핀다.(한 모금 들이킨다) 오... 마이... 갓 (담배를 계속 피기 시작한다)

Joey: Chandler! Give me that! 

      챈들어! 담배 가져와!

Chandler: No, no. You've got your options. You can smoke this or you can hold in your mouth and smoke it like this.

    아냐 아냐. 너는 여러가지 방법이 있어. 그냥 담배를 필수도 있고, 아니면 입에 문체로 담배를 필 수도 있어

Joey: Give me the cigarette!

        담배 돌려줘!

Chandler: You try.

              한번 해봐

Joey: Thank you. Okay, how's this?

        고마워. 좋아, 이건 어때?

Chandler: Okay, that's not bad. Alright, now when you're finished. It's really cool if you flick it, you kinda flick it! flick it! (Joey flicks it) That's good. All right, you keep practicing and I'll go put off the sofa.

          좋아, 나쁘지 않아. 그러면, 이제 다 피고 나면, 손으로 튕기면 아주 편해. 손으로 튕겨봐, 튕겨! (조이가 담배를 튕긴다) 좋아 잘했어. 그러면, 너는 계속 연습을 해, 나는 소파 불 끄러 갈게.
