Chidi : Well, I was born in Nigeria, raised in Senegal, but my work took me all over the place Australia, Hong Kong, Paris. What about you? Eleanor : Uh, well, I… I was born in Phoenix. Arizona. And then I went to school in Tempe, Arizona. And then I moved back to Phoenix, Arizona. Your English
is amazing. Chidi : Oh! I'm actually speaking French. This place just translates whatever you say into a language the other person can understand. So it's incredible. Eleanor : Whoa. Chidi : And now I want to say this. Eleanor : Mm-kay. Chidi : Eleanor. I have spent my entire life in pursuit of fundamental truths about the universe. Eleanor : Yeah, man, I'm pretty sure I wasn't a death row lawyer who collected clown paintings and rescued orphans. They got my name right, but nothing else. I mean, somebody royally forked up. Somebody forked up. Why can't I say "fork"? Chidi : If you're trying to curse, you can't here. I guess a lot of people in this neighborhood don't like it, so it's prohibited. Eleanor : That's bull-shirt.
Chidi : So, uh, if you're not this person, then who are you? What did you do for a living? Eleanor : I was in sales.

 

Part2

첫번째 문장

"The point is, you are here because you lived one of the very best lives that could be lived."

중요한 것은, 당신이 여기 있는 것입니다. 왜냐면 당신은 당신이 살 수 있는 가장 멋진 삶을 살았기 때문입니다.

저는 여기서 헷갈렸던 것이 that could be lived 였는데 that could be lived가 lives 를 수식한다고 생각하면, 살 수 있는 삶 lives (that could be lived) 라고 생각하면 쉽습니다.

 

두번째 문장

"One of the other people in your neighborhood is your actual soul mate, and you will spend eternity together."

당신지역에 있는 사람들 중 하나가 바로 당신의 소울메이트 입니다. 그리고 함께 영원한 시간을 보낼 것입니다.

그말이 맞는 거 같다.

여기서는 about의 느낌을 가져가는 것이 중요하다고 생각합니다. 한국인들은 about 을 잘 안쓰죠 이럴때. That sounds right 와 That sounds about right 의 느낌 차이는 첫번째는 '완전히 맞다, 확실하다'는 의미가 있고, 두번째는 '맞는데 적은 확률로 틀릴수도 있다, 대부분은 맞다.'의 느낌을 가져가면 좋습니다.

 

다섯번째 문장

한번 더 말하자면, 이것은 놀라울정도로 특별한 시스템이다

by the way : 그리고, 그런데.

by the way도 한국인들이 잘 못 쓰는 단어중에 하나 인거 같습니다. 제가 느낀 by the way 는 Anyway랑 어느정도 느낌이 비슷한거 같습니다. 말하던 주제랑 상관없이 새로운 주제를 시작할 때 쓰면 좋을 거 같네요.

 

일곱번째 문장

"So I guess that's why my house, for example, is this adorable, little cottage, whereas other people might have homes that are bigger, like that one."

음 그러니깐, 예를 들어, 매력적이고, 작은 이 집이 내 집이군요, 다른 사람들의 집이 저것처럼 아주 큰 것인것에 반해서.

adorable : very attrative, delightful

cottage : small house

whereas : while on the contrary

 

여덟번째 문장

"As you can see, the interior has been decorated just as you like it, in the Icelandic primitive style."

당신이 보듯이, 인테리어는 당신이 좋아하는 아이슬란드식의 전통적인 스타일로 꾸며졌어요

As you can see : 요 표현은, 실제로 무언가를 보여주면서 말을 시작할 때 하면 좋습니다.

아홉번째 문장

이 활동이 너를 가장 높은 곳으로 올렸다.

이 문장은 뜻이나 이런게 어렵다기 보다, 일상생활에서 쓰기 좋을 거 같아서 뽑아봤습니다. 예를 들어서, 나의 인생을 얘기할 때, "내가 글쓰기를 시작한것은 내 인생의 터닝포인트다." 같은 것을 When I start writing, it really put me over the top. 같이 쓰면 좋을 거 같아서 남김니다.

 

열 두번째 문장

"Eleanor? I'm Chidi Anagonye, and you are my soul mate." "Cool, bring it in, man." "Now, excuse me. I have other people to attend to."

엘레너? 나는 치디 아나곤예라고 해, 너는 나의 소울메이트야. 오 멋지네, 어서와 친구. 음 나는 이제 다른사람들을 보러 가야겠어.

Bring it in : 어서와의 느낌입니다.

이것과 비슷하게 많이 쓰이는 Bring it on! 은 무언가에 도전하고 시작할 때 많이 사용합니다.

attend to : to deal with something or someone.

 

열 세번째 문장

"my work took me all over the place Australia, Hong Kong, Paris."

나의 일이 나를 여러장소로 가게 했습니다, 호주, 홍콩, 파리

이 문장도 문장을 활용하는데 좋을 거 같아서 뽑아 봤습니다. 예를 들어서, my girlfriend took me all over the country Netherlands, Croatia, Spain. (실제로 곧 유럽여행을 가는데, 여자친구가 유럽에 있기 때문에 저렇게 가게 될 거 같아서 문장을 써봤습니다) TMI

열 네번째 문장

"This place just translates whatever you say into a language the other person can understand."

이 장소는 니가 무슨말을 하든, 다른사람이 이해할 수 있는 언어로 번역을 해준다.

보기쉽게 정리를 하면, This place just translates (whatever you say) into a language (the other person can understand) 각각 괄로 앞의 단어를 수식한다고 생각하면 쉽게 보입니다.

 

열 다섯번째 문장

"I have spent my entire life in pursuit of fundamental truths about the universe. And now we can actaully learn about them together as soul mates. It's overwhelming."

나는 나의 모든 삶을 우주의 대한 근본적인 사실들을 연구하는데 썼다. 그리고 지금 우리는 같이 배울 수 있다 소울메이트로서. 아주 좋아!

Fundamental : 가장 기본이되는 원칙, 원리

Truth : 사실

It's overwhelming : 이 문장은 사실 부정적일 때랑 긍정적일 때 다 쓰기 때문에, 그 상황과 문맥이 가장 중요하고, 딱히 그런게 들어나지 않으면 감정적으로 큰 느낌을 생각하면 됩니다. 여기서는 긍정적인 면으로 사용되었습니다.

열 여섯번째 문장

"Eleanor, I swear that I will never say or do anything to cause you any harm."

엘리널, 나는 맹세한다. 나는 결코 당신에게 해로운을 주는 말이나 행동을 하지 않겠다.

이 문장도, 왠지 맹세하거나 할 때 많이 쓰는 문구 같아서, 한번 가져와봤습니다. 연습하면 언제든 유용하게 쓰일 수 있을 거 같습니다.

 

열 일곱번째 문장

"I'm not supposed to be here" "What did you do for a living?"

나는 여기에 있으면 안되. 너는 어떤 것을 하며 살았었니?

be supposed to 라고 많이 외웠던 어구인데, 보통 ~이 하기로 예정되어있었을 때 사용한다. 여기서는 나는 이곳에 있으면 안되었어 라는 의미 입니다.

What did you do 라는 말은 우리가 자주 쓰지만, 거기에 for a living? for fun? 이런식으로 붙여 쓰는 것을 잘 하지 못합니다. 영어를 더더욱 영어적으로 접근할 수 있는 좋은 문장이라고 생각해서 가져왔습니다!
